Battalion Chief J.C. Cole Death, Obituary: Retired Battalion Chief J.C. Cole, Passed Away

With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of recently retired Battalion Chief J.C. Cole, a devoted public servant whose life was defined by courage, compassion, and an unshakable sense of duty. For more than 23 years, Chief Cole faithfully served the Charleston Fire Department, answering the call day and night to protect lives, homes, and the very fabric of the community he loved.

Throughout his distinguished career, Chief Cole exemplified what it truly meant to be a firefighter and a leader. He led not by words alone, but by example—calm in the face of danger, steady under pressure, and always guided by integrity. His dedication went far beyond the fireground. He was a mentor to younger firefighters, a trusted colleague to his peers, and a reassuring presence to countless citizens during some of the most frightening moments of their lives.

Chief Cole believed deeply in service, teamwork, and looking out for one another. He carried himself with humility, never seeking recognition, yet earning respect everywhere he went. His compassion for others and his commitment to doing what was right left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. The Charleston Fire Department is stronger because of his years of leadership, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.

Though he had recently retired, Chief Cole’s legacy continues to live on in the department he helped shape and in the lives he touched over more than two decades of service. His absence will be profoundly felt in the firehouse halls, across the community, and in the hearts of all who knew him.
